Starting in the second half of the 1980s, sounds that did not fit into the popular musical genres recognized by the recording industry were grouped under the term “world music.” For years, this new music enjoyed considerable success in Europe, giving “world musicians” hope that their creations would be widely disseminated. However, starting in the 2000s, the waning novelty of world music and the crisis in the music industry had a significant impact on the commercial viability of these artists. Through the memories and musical practices of Charles Kely Zana-Rotsy, a Malagasy guitarist and singer who played a significant role in the world music scene in France, the film seeks to offer a more nuanced and personal view of a cultural phenomenon that, far from being considered over, still shapes the construction of identity, the discourses, and the actions of those who were part of it.
