In the Utawana village of the Mehinako people—an Amazonian group from central Brazil located in the Xingu Indigenous Territory (MT)—women have stopped giving birth at home with the help of midwives and now give birth in hospitals. This film features the words (iyayakapiri) of the haukanünu—women who care for young children (usually mothers)—and their perceptions of these recent changes. It offers reflections on hospital births, the role of local specialists in supporting childbirth, and explores perspectives on the future of Mehinako childbirth practices.
