Synopsis

In the basin of the Uaçá and Oiapoque rivers, in the extreme north of Amapá, on the border with French Guiana, the Karipuna, Galibi-Marworno, Palikur and Galibi of Oiapoque Indians live. The contact of these people with the population of neighboring cities is intense and fundamental for both parties. Indigenous people are the main suppliers of cassava flour and fruits to the cities. Its products reach Saint Georges and Cayenne in French Guiana. This situation of intense interethnic exchange certainly led to the formation of a diffuse tradition common to all these people, visible mainly in the use of a French language, Patois. This, however, did not nullify the cultural differences specific to each group, which are still often reinforced due to contact. In this video, without losing sight of this broader dimension of these communities' ways of life, the author seeks to establish a counterpoint between the daily activities of the region, flour production, fishing and long boat trips along canals and rivers; indigenous games, held every two years; and the construction of the Museum of Indigenous Peoples of Oiapoque.
